The Nkomati Nickel Mine is a partnership between African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Norilsk Nickel (Proprietary) Limited. Nkomati was established in 1997 and is South Africa’s only primary nickel mine engaged in a polymetallic deposit comprising nickel, copper, chrome and PGMs. The mine is situated between Machadodorp and Badplaas on the Uitkomst geological Complex in the Mpumalanga Lowveld.

Aveng Moolmans was awarded the Nkomati opencast mining operations contract in December 2013, with contract commencement in July 2014. This is a 5 year contract to mine overburden and ore. Moolmans is providing a full mining service which includes bush clearing, top soil stripping, drilling and blasting, haulage of ore and waste, and rehandling operations.

The mining fleet comprises excavators, dump trucks, drill rigs along and the necessary ancillary equipment.

The staff complement is currently around 700 persons with growth expected to result in 800 employees with the arrival of additional load and haul teams.
