Star and Comet

Date: : 2011 - 2014

Location: Tanzania

Commodity: Gold

The Geita Gold Mine commenced production in 2000 and is the largest single gold mining operation in the AngloGold Ashanti group.  The mine is located in north-western Tanzania in the Lake Victoria goldfields of the Mwanza region.  The Geita gold deposit is mined as a multiple open pit operation with Star and Comet being the latest pit developed.

Aveng Moolmans was awarded a 3 year contract late in 2010 to mine the Star and Comet Pit.  Mining commenced in April 2011. Mobilisation presented its own unique challenges – the equipment was shipped to Mombasa in Kenya and then road freighted to Kisumo on the northern shore of Lake Victoria.  From Kisumo the freight was ferried across the lake to Mwanza, customs cleared and then on to Nungwe Bay. The last part of the long journey was the 22 kilometers to site.

Moolmans was responsible for the full mining operation which included load, haul and dump.

The workforce was mainly Tanzanian recruited from the surrounding villages and were bussed to site daily.

The Star and Comet contract came to an end in March 2014.
